Wow what a fishing story we have to tell you! Yesterday Steve lost a rod and reel into the ocean while fishing for halibut. Today he decided to go back to the area he lost it. So he anchored and put his lines out, and with great luck he snagged the rod and reel back. Odds are one and a million!! In the midst of cleaning the rod and reel, the other line was going crazy with a massive halibut! So low and behold this was the catch of the day a 180lb halibut!

June 6 Fishing in Port Renfrew

Went salmon fishing first thing , first lines down we started off with a double header and things only got better from there on out. We were picking up one spring after another. They all averaged 14-23lbs. Non stop action! Went offshore for halis and picked up 4 beautys 20-93lbs. Just doesn't get any better than this!

June 5 Fishing in Port Renfrew

Salmon fishing was on fire first light till 9:30. We hooked into 20 fish and landed 12 nice springs 12-23lbs. We went offshore for halis and what a day! The big guys moved in! We had 6 halibut 35-92lbs. To top the day off we had two crab pots full to the rim. Stellar day in Renfrew!

Hali fishing was on again! Went offshore we landed 4 nice halibut 20-35lbs. Fishing conditons were a little tougher with the wind but we managed to pick up 6 nice springs again 8-15lbs.

Offshore halibut fishing was awesome! We landed 4 halis 35-70lbs. Went in shore salmon fishing and picked up 6 springs 8-15lbs.

Fishing Port Renfrew was another stellar day, we fished halis to start and they were on right away,with 5 nice halis 20-35 lbs what a start,we moved into shore for salmon,first rod down hand not even off the break bang 18lber,we had none stop action after that with 5 double headers and taking the biggest fish caught this year at 33 lbs a beauty,we had 10 nice springs all 15-33 lbs ,doesn't get any better then that any time of the year ,,things are heating up very exciting .

Fishing for halibut was incredible with six halis between 30-60lbs . Moving up the coast a little we slammed 12 nice springs between 12-25lbs. Fishing was red hot in Port Renfrew.

Stayed on the beach and fishing for salmon was slow to start but by 10:30 it was game on with 20 fish landed averaging 6-20lbs. Great day of salmon fishing.

Fishing was awesome for salmon first thing in the morning with 10-20lbs. We went off shore for halis and caught a limit of 30-40 lbs. We had a great killer whale show the first of the year.

Fishing was fantastic at Swiftsure for halibut we had a limit of halis 35-55lbs in an hour and a half. We went fishing for salmon and were successful with 7-15 lbs. Crabbing remains excellent.

May 13 Fishing in Port Renfrew

Fishing started with some fantastic salmon fishing, we landed 6 springs, 6-15lbs by 8:30am. We headed off shore for halibut and it was one of those spectacular days with 20 or more humpback whales all around breaching, what a show. Coho 3-5lbs starting to show and excellent halibut fishing , 35-55lbs.

Fishing was awesome for salmon off the Rock Pile and we landed 6 springs, 12-23lbs. Action was fast and furious they were hitting on hoochies at 60-90 ft.

Fishing out of Port Renfrew was excellent for halibut and salmon. We had a limit of chinook 8-16lbs by 9:30am and we were off hali fishing, we picked up 3 hali's, 25lbs- 50lbs.

Went hali fishing today off of Carmanha Lighthouse caught an 85lb hali. Also salmon fishing off of Owen Point was excellent we kept 10 springs , 12-18lbs. The crab traps were full again with keeper crabs. Beautiful flat and calm day.

Fishing in Port Renfrew was fantastic today, with limit catches of chinook salmon ranging from 8-25lbs from Owen Point to the Rock Pile. And to end the day off with a trap full of crabs.

April 4 Seawind Fishing Report

We had some fun early season salmon fishing in Sooke today. In just a few hours out, we landed 4 nice springs, with the biggest a 25lb beauty. Unfortunately it was wild, with only hatchery spring salmon allowed for retention, so we had to release it. The next three caught were 20lbs 13lbs and 8lbs. A great few hours of fishing all on anchovy, at 100 foot depth off the Trap Shack. We saw a couple of others around 20 pounds caught as well.

A few more weeks of Sooke salmon fishing, then we'll be heading up to Port Renfrew for another season. Looking forward to some fun fishing adventures this summer! Hope to see you in Port Renfrew.

I have always appreciated your professional skill, knowledge, personal care and extraordinary efforts extended on your Charters all these years. I know there is quite a lot of time and a multitude of considerate work/effort, that goes on before/after each season, as well as the daily operational work involved for each/every Charter. Personally, it has not gone unnoticed. I sincerely appreciate Seawind Fishing, Tammy and you, Steve, for always providing such exemplary care and service yearly, to the my friends and myself, whenever we are fishing onboard "The Optimist".

August Swiftsure Bank Fishing Trip

A successful Swiftsure Bank fishing trip with Gerry, Kevin, Trevor and Gord.

Gord says: "Hi Steve, we just wanted to pass on our thanks for a most excellent fishing adventure last Sunday. Have not had a day of fishing like that in a long long time. We all appreciate the extra effort you put in (especially Kevin) to get us that last big one to make the day a perfect limit catch of Big Springs and Halibut. I have attached some photos of the day (hopefully they all make it), and although we may not be all smiling on the outside (pretty tired) we were all extremely happy with the day of fishing you provided. As, well please pass on to Cody a big thank you from all of us for the bait, cleaning up after us and all the help he gave us on the docks. We are looking forward to doing it all over again next year, Cheers."

That's a great day's fishing on the south-west coast of Vancouver Island!

fishing 22,23rd of June fishing was excellent for springs at Nit -Nat both days we hit 7 springs on the 22 by 10:30 and on the 23rd we hit 15 springs alll between 15 and 27lbs great fishing and theres still a few swimmming around with sore lips,,we anchored up on the 23rd for halis and we werer lucky to get into a school of beauties all between 40 and 45 lbs,,,a great 2 days.

June 20th went looking for big halis on the anchor and the first to jump on was a 70lber great start we managed to get 4 more 15-35lbs ,went out to the swiftsure bank and proceeded to spank the chinooks with a fast and furious pace of 12-25lbs,,great day

June 19th,went hali fishing off the get go none stop 15 35lbs done in half an hour went chinook fishing and landed a limit catch of 10 -18lbers and some nice hatchery coho up to 7 lbs already,,tight lines

Salmon fishing is picking up we landed 3 chinook in a short time up to 30lbs and a little birdy says that the mother load of springs hit the Swiftsure bank they were so thick of fish that you could hardly keep your gear down averaging 10 to 22lbs,,i look forward to fishing on Wed and seeing if the rumour is true ,,,till then tight lines

Fishing remains good for halibut with limit catches 15 to 25lbs ,salmon still remains spradic with 1 day good the next slow,we caught 3 nice springs today up to 24lbs and lost 2 oters,,crabing remains excellent ,,,,tight lines

Fishing was on fire for big halis with a limit catch of 50 to 55lbs, salmon was a little tougher with 2 nice chinook 18 and 27 lbs ,,a great day and the weather has been holding very nicely,,tight lines

Fishing was great. On a day when other boats were getting skunked, Steve had the skills and knowledge to fill our boat with a limit of Hali's and 3 good size Spring Salmon. The sirius radio, breaching humpbacks, porpoises, and the crab feast were superb bonuses on an already memorable day. It was comforting to have the "Optimist" in the rougher water. I would highly recommend Steve and plan to be in his boat again in the future.

Fishing was excellent today for halibut, with a limit catch of 35 to 60 lbs halibut.
Salmon was awesome today with five springs 15 to 25 lbs. Another great trip with lots of smiles...tightlines.

Fishing was great again for halibut with none stop action with halis 15 to 30 lbs,,salmon fishing for chinook was slower with only 1 spring 15lbs ,another steller day on the water and the crab traps ended the day with a full bounty,limit of 7 inch rock hard crabs ,,best crabbing ive ever seen in the san juan harbour in my 25 years of fishing what a bonus,,,,tight lines

Fishing was excellent for halibut,,we had our limit of chickens 15lbs up too 35lbs the water was beautiful which allowed us to go into nit-Nat for Springs ,in the first 2 minutes we landed a 28lber what an excellent fight first run was 200yards , the next chinook was a 22lber and an hour later to end the day we landed a nice 20lber,,all and all a very sucessful day with lots of smiles,,tight lines

After a fun winter fishing feeder Chinooks off Sooke, the Optimist has now moved to its summer base in Port Renfrew.

Port Renfrew's early season has been excellent, with some good size halibut coming in and a great early run of Chinook/King salmon.

We are looking forward to an awesome fishing season ahead!
